What a lovely gift you've given us for Candlemas! Thank you so much. I love this artist. I love the eyes of Mary here. They are present in the love of her Child, but also far away in some unfathomable meditation. Beautiful.

Thank you Shannon. I love that “some unfathomable meditation.” So true.

Beautiful! Thank you so much for introducing me to a new painter, a beautiful painting. And for the lovely explication. I am familiar with much of the language of religious paintings, but there are always details I miss-- like I didn't notice the wall and I didn't recognize the cypress trees.

Thank you Melanie! Marianne Stokes has some beautiful paintings, but I love her Marian portraits most of all.

I missed the cypress trees the first time I looked at it too. Some paintings just take time to really absorb. The walled garden is something I first read about a couple of years ago and have since noticed all over Marian paintings.

I have a tiny icon of the Virgin of Tenderness on my desk at work. It is a consolation. ❤️ Beautiful to read about Stokes’ piece.

The Vladimir icon is one of my favorites too…I have it over my sink. Thank you!

Thank you once again for bringing Marianne Stokes' work to a wider audience. All of her paintings of the Madonna and Child are beautiful, aren't they?

Thank you Martin. Her paintings of the Madonna and Child really are wondrous. I love the one with the crown of thorns too.
