The French artist Georges de La Tour painted at least five portraits of Mary Magdalene, a sizable number considering there are only 35 known paintings in his oeuvre.
This was very nice, thank you. And just in time for her feast day yesterday. One of my daughters has been attending Magdalen College, a wonderful little great books college in New Hampshire that has unfortunately just had to close. I shared this with her. (I also am pretty sure I saw that painting in LACMA about a decade ago, when I spent a semester on leave outside of LA. It's pretty striking and sticks in one's memory.)
Thank you Peter. I have heard great things about Magdalen College. Sorry to see it close.
The painting is very striking. I studied La Tour’s paintings in college but had no idea how large they were until I saw the Met version of this painting years later. It certainly left an impression on me.
Thank you, Amelia. We thought Magdalen did a wonderful job and were also saddened. Small colleges are under so much pressure these days. (Our daughter will transfer to a school in Austria to finish out her last two years, so hopefully that will be an exciting new adventure for her in spite of the disappointment.) I've been enjoying your posts--thanks for sharing these.
Sorry to hear about the college. I live close to LA and this is definitely inspiration for me to go see the piece! Crazy to think his artwork are in different museums worldwide…
Such profound thoughts - I've often wondered what her interior life would be like as a woman who saw the price of her salvation firsthand & who first encountered the Risen Lord.
Praise God for your love of art and way of inviting others to see him through it. Thanks for reminding us that our relationship with Christ is a living reality and suffering is sweet when it’s experienced with our Lord. I’m sharing this with my women’s group ♥️
The mysterious spiritual drama of Mary Magdalen—I have never thought of it that way—

Thank you so much Jacelyn! I love the way you put that.
