During the month of May, children crown statues of the Madonna with wreaths of flowers and Mary gardens begin to bloom, for in the Church, May is Mary’s month.
Beautiful essay and art. Coincidentally, this very morning I was labeling captions for three medieval "Hortus Conclusus" Annunications in which Mary is in a walled garden and a unicorn is in her lap (the unicorn was a symbol for the Christ in the High and Late Middle Ages). My essay is on unicorns in medieval thought, though, so I was ignoring the garden symbolism itself -- it's nice to see you expound on it.
Thanks Amelia for this article on Mary Gardens. My daughter, my wife and I had a Mary Garden a couple years ago and we loved it, especially watering the flowers and the contemplative atmosphere. Thanks for sharing the history. I think this year would be a great time to plant another Mary Garden.
Thank you David! We had a lot of fun picking out the flowers for ours. It is amazing how a little garden can foster that kind of contemplative atmosphere.
💐 😌 🎶 Great work sister, Olde and Knew with footnotes. 🔢✔️ Thank you. "The Angel Cried to the Lady Full of Grace: REJOICE, REJOICE! Your Son is RISEN from His three days in the tomb..."

Thank you! Medieval garden paintings are so charming and rich with meaning/symbolism. I’m interested to read your piece on unicorns!
Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you!
What a great selection of images. They really bring springtime to life on the page.
Thank you! It is one of my favorite genres for sure. It was hard to choose only a few!
Lovely work!
Thank you!
