A great solemnity has this day risen upon our earth: a feast both to God and to men: for it is the feast of Christ the Mediator, who is present in the sacred Host, that God may be given to man, and man to God.
Excellent collection and descriptions. A well-done research job. Congratulations.
"Body and blood of my God, I adore you, present in the Eucharist, at the same time symbol and leaven of unity between Christ and the faithful, who feed on it."
It was really good. I'll read all your articles. You bring together two subjects that are very dear to me: art and Christianity — particularly Catholicism.
Yes it is he fulfillment of procession of the Old Testament Ark of the Covenant. I took part in a four station procession in Sacred Heart Church in Three Rivers, TX. The wind was howling which added to the sense of both inspiration and battle.
Tomorrow I am planning to be on such a procession, accompanying the precious body and blood of Christ through the streets of my NJ town from my parish church to the neighboring parish church. I’m looking forward to this.
That is wonderful! I have never done a procession from one church to another, but that is how the Corpus Christi processions were originally done in medieval times.
In the painting by Teófilo Castillo there is a strange sort of processional item. It looks like a cylindrical banner. Does anyone know anything about it?
Amelia, I began reading this when it came out, then got interrupted by something or other and only now got back to finish it properly. Very glad that I did! Very nice, with a wonderful collection of images. My wife remembers the Corpus Christi processions from her girlhood in Germany with great fondness; it is probably her favorite church holiday, and she is always sorry that we don't often have them here in the States, at least not in the churches where we have been. A number of years back we happened to be in Austria for the holiday and were able to attend a church in Vienna and join their procession afterwards, along with a little parish celebration they had when it was finished.
I'm also glad that you included the Waldmüller painting. I've seen that one in person and like it quite a bit!

Thank you! I was fortunate to find some sources who have done fabulous research. Monti and Weisner’s books are full of riches.
I was in Spain walking the Camino on Corpus Christi last year. Absolutely beautiful
What an amazing experience. I have heard Spanish processions are wonderful.
